Daniel "Dapper Dan" Day is the godfather of hip-hop style. During the 1980s the famous tailor outfitted everyone local drug dealers Rich and Alpo to rap icons like LL Cool J, Eric B. & Rakim, and Salt-N-Pepa. He made a name for himself on the streets of Harlem by using Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Fendi fabrics to create custom pieces for each one of his clients. After litigation between he and the luxury brand's his boutique was closed in 1992 over the counterfeit product.

Dan remained quiet for the most part, but his fashion legacy was kept alive in hip-hop. As streetwear became more popular within today's culture, the tailor began to appear in documentaries like Fresh Dressed where he discussed hip hop's influence on fashion. Now, Sony Pictures will be creating a biopic based on Dan's life that will draw from his upcoming memoir.

Jerrod Carmichael will write and produce the film. Dapper Dan and his son Jelani will serve as the executive producers of the film. The studio is presenting it as a "high stakes coming of age story" which takes place in Harlem.

Dapper Dan has begun to work with Gucci on a collaborative capsule. The luxury brand has also teamed up with him to open a boutique in Harlem where he will continue to make custom pieces for those that enter the business. DJ Khaled is just one of the many celebrities who has stopped for a fit.

Dapper Dan's memoir will be published by Random House in 2019. The movie is slated to follow.
