After Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooter Nikolas Cruz was apprehended, it has been reported that his behavior in the Broward County Jail wasn’t normal.

He has apparently been “smiling and giggling” behind bars. Cruz was initially in the infirmary and was transferred to an isolated cell on February 23, according to documents obtained by CNN. Then, On February 24, he was visited by an unidentified family member. According to the report, his only other visitors have been his defense attorneys and physicians.

A deputy noted that he had a “quiet demeanor,” “follows commands,” and “talks softly,” Another report painted a picture of him as a cooperative inmate who was “very engaged, responsive” and “talkative” in an attorney/doctor interview on February 18. Deputies also said he “often sits with a blank stare, appears to be in thought” and that his thinking appeared “logical.”

Gordon Weekes, Cruz’s lawyer, warned against overthinking the notes. “They are snippets, observations from corrections officers and are not clinical impressions made by his treating psychologist or psychiatrist at the jail. They don’t show a complete picture,” he said.
