Martin Shkreli, the much-maligned pharmaceutical exec often referred to as "Pharma Bro," will be spending well over a decade behind bars, if prosecutors have their way.

In a 68-page document filed Tuesday, prosecutors argued that Shkreli failed to show "genuine remorse" for defrauding investors, citing jailhouse communications between him and unnamed others.

“Shkreli was adept at finding what he thought people wanted to hear. And he molded himself accordingly to deceive and defraud,” prosecutors wrote while citing Shkreli's correspondence.

“No one spends millions of dollars on drug projects out of the goodness of their hearts,” wrote Shkreli in a February letter unearthed by authorities. “The people who put up the money have one thing on their mind: making more.”

Shkreli is potentially facing up to 27 years in prison, though his defense team has called that sentence "draconian" and are asking for 12 to 18 months, accompanied by 2,000 hours of community service and therapy.

Prosecutors argued Tuesday that Shkreli has in no way changed.

“It does not accurately reflect who he truly is — a man who stands before this Court without showing any genuine remorse, a man who has consistently chosen to put profit and the cultivation of a public image before all else,” they wrote, adding, “And a man who believes the ends always justifies the means.”
