Lakeith Stanfield's rise to prominence has been a rather quick one and yet he's turned out to become the standout supporting character amongst star-studded casts. For instance, his minor role and appearance in Get Out prompted one of the most memorable scenes in the movie, his role as Snoop Dogg in Straight Outta Compton was memorable despite how well the movie was cast, and his role as Darius on Donald Glover's, Atlanta, has provided the show with much needed comic relief.
And now, it looks like Stanfield is on the verge of being a part of another film as the actor mentioned a discussion that took place while on the set of a major motion picture involving a white colleague, the success of Black Panther, and race.
In the short clip, he posted to his personal IG account, Stanfield reveals that a white associate of his said that she felt guilty about the historical atrocities that took place while establishing the infrastructure of the current United States, especially in regards to the treatment of black people.
Stanfield then digs a little deeper and says that she shouldn't feel guilty about the past or the actions of her ancestors but she should recognize that she benefits from the systematic oppression of people of color that still takes place today because of what happened in the past.
Socially, we're making progress towards a better racial climate but it's gonna take those with fairer skin to acknowledge that they have a privilege and to utilize it in order to even the playing fields for everyone to become prosperous.
Honestly, the idea of recognizing privilege isn't that complex and should be recognized as an advantage for opportunity but with this current swing in the social climate, we see a lot more people of color in positions of real power coming in the near future.
It's gonna take work on all ends and if we continue to grind and come together for a common goal there are possibilities of flourishing communities for all as mentioned by Lakeith. Respect to the budding actor for his honesty and look out for season two of Atlanta coming March 1st.
