Government officials have confirmed that a man attempted to throw a grenade into the U.S. embassy in Montenegro on Wednesday but was killed in the process of the attack.

No one was injured in the attack due to the fact that the embassy was closed at the time of the blast. The area was sealed off by police, and the embassy warned Americans to avoid the area because of "an active security situation."

The government of Montenegro reported that the incident occurred at 12:30 a.m. local time. An unidentified man was seen throwing an object into the embassy compound that was most likely a hand grenade.

“The U.S. embassy in Podgorica advises US citizens there is an active security situation at the US embassy in Podgorica,” it said on its website. “Avoid the embassy until further notice.”

According to UPI, although the Montenegro government said the man "committed suicide," the State Department's undersecretary for public diplomacy and public affairs, Steve Goldstein told The New York Times that the agency wasn't certain the incident was meant to be a suicide attack.

State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert tweeted, "At this time, Embassy officials are working closely with police to identify the assailant(s)."
