President Trump has announced that following months of review on their nature and legality, he is ordering a ban on bump stocks and other attachments used to customize gun triggers for a rapid-fire effect.

"Just a few moments ago I signed a memo directing the attorney general to propose regulations that ban all devices that turn legal weapons into machine guns," the President said at a White House Medal of Valor event on Tuesday, February 20.

The move comes on the heels of a probe that he tasked the Department of Justice and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives to take on in December. Trump was moved to press for the review following the Las Vegas attack that left 58 people dead and 851 injured at the hands of slain gunman Stephen Paddock.

While high powered assault rifles that are typically classified as machine guns have been outlawed from citizens since 1986, such tools as bump stocks have been aquired to give conventional firearms similar capabilities.

With last week's school shooting in Parkland, FL fresh on the minds of the public, the proposed ban comes at a time when there is renewed interest in addressing the issue of gun control and the National Rifle Association's influence over lawmakers.
