An entire Ohio school district closed down after a shooting was reported in a Massillon junior high on Tuesday morning, February 20.

A seventh-grade student at Jackson Memorial Middle School was hospitalized after he was found injured from what has been determined to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, just before 8 a.m.

Local police and members of the FBI reported to the 7355 Mudbrook St. scene shortly after the student arrived via school bus and strayed into a restroom, where he is believed to have directed the .22 caliber gun towards himself and pulled the trigger.

Following a lockdown of the building and its affiliated high school, classes and extracurricular activities in each of the other four schools under the district's jurisdiction were canceled. Administrators are reportedly contemplating whether to allow students back on Wednesday, as an investigation into the incident is ongoing at this point.

No other students were injured or believed to be involved in the shooting. The wounded youngster's condition is unknown for the time being, and his motives are being explored. Along with the firearm, he was found to be in possession of additional ammunition and 'distractionary devices.'

The suspected suicide attempt comes one week after a mass shooting in a Parkland, Florida high school drew the nation into a passionate debate about the state of gun laws and gun culture - on the heels of several previous school shootings that have already taken place in 2018.
