Local news station Fox 13, reported that Kanesville Elementary school located in West Haven, Utah informed young girls that they must agree to dance with any boy who asks them to dance at an upcoming event.

The elementary school is now facing charges on accusations relating to teaching the sixth-grade girls that they should accept boys offers at an annual event called, Valentine's Day dance.

The school clarified that the message they're sending is meant to teach each child how to respect their peers. The Webster School District spokesperson, Lane Findlay stated, “we want to promote kindness, and so we want you to say yes when someone asks you to dance.”

A resident of West Haven, Natalie Richard fears that children will get the wrong message and cannot yet comprehend the “behavioral norms and expectations” of other young adults.

Richard stated, “I do see it from their perspective when it comes to that, but there are many other ways to teach children how to be accepting than with a social dance [however it] sends a bad message to girls that girls have to say ‘yes,’ [it] sends a bad message to boys that girls can’t say ‘no.'”

However, the school said the dance is voluntary and no student is going to be placed in an uncomfortable situation. All students are provided with a list of students who have shown interest in dancing with them beforehand. They are then given a chance to determine what they will do.
