A Brooklyn court delivered justice for a victim of a former correction officer.

Carlos Martinez was supposed to be a man of the law. Being a then-Metropolitan Detention Center lieutenant, it was his job to maintain order and respect within the prison walls. Instead, he used his authority to bring fear and intimidation to those he tried to keep silent.

A former inmate of the Sunset Park Facility took the stand in a Brooklyn court to detail the horrors she faced during her stay. "Maria" shared nightmarish details of being forced to have sex with Martinez. She explained that the attacks took place in the lieutenant's office from December 2015 until she left in April 2016.

Maria also vulnerably shared, “It was the worst thing that ever happened to me. He killed me inside.”

After listening to her testimony, defense lawyer Anthony Ricco tried to discredit Maria, given her prison history. That, however, didn't affect the jurors' decision to find Martinez guilty on all counts.

Interim Brooklyn U.S. Attorney Richard Donoghue said: “Martinez exploited the victim’s fear of being punished with additional jail time and other disciplinary action, but his attempts to intimidate the victim into silence ultimately failed as evidenced by her brave testimony.”
