Legendary rocker Tom Petty died from an accidental overdose of prescription meds, according to his autopsy released via a statement by his wife and daughter on Friday.
The info was posted on his Facebook page shortly before the L.A. County Coroner's office announced their findings and Petty's full autopsy report.
Among the drugs found in Petty's system were the painkiller Fentanyl (which killed Prince in 2016), oxycodone (Oxycontin), temazepam (Restoril), alprazolam (Xanax), and citalopram (Celexa).
Petty had been touring despite suffering from emphysema, a fractured hip and knee problems, said the family. The pain medications had been prescribed to allow the 66-year-old musician to soldier on despite the ailments.
"On the day he died he was informed his hip had graduated to a full on break and it is our feeling that the pain was simply unbearable and was the cause for his over use of medication," said the family's statement, adding that Petty had performed more than 50 shows with a fractured hip.
"As a family we recognize this report may spark a further discussion on the opioid crisis and we feel that it is a healthy and necessary discussion and we hope in some way this report can save lives. Many people who overdose begin with a legitimate injury or simply do not understand the potency and deadly nature of these medications," read the statement above.
