When the Grammy Awards come around to close out the month two Sundays from now, the world will see Lil Uzi Vert's name listed among the nominees in the Best New Artist and Best Rap Performance categories. To some of his followers, the honor will stand as validation of the talent and star power that has made him one of today's most popular young artists. But for others, it'll signify a willingness to "sell out" to the demands of the industry. Surprisingly, Lil Uzi doesn't necessarily disagree.
When a fan hit the rockstar rapper up to reminisce about how he used to be more rap than rock and to claim that he "sold out," Uzi responded in agreement.
"I know exactly what you mean I had to chart buddy. You see how the worst songs be the hits and the best songs stay lowkey underground," he replied. Uzi then followed the acknowledgment up with a promise that might not sit well with those who jumped on the bandwagon after he tweaked his style: "I’m back on my raw talent f*** charting ....is that cool?"
Lil Uzi most definitely shined in 2017, charting up among Billboard's top 10 with the feature he had on Migos' "Bad & Boujee" and his "XO Tour Llif3" single. With such playlist favorites creating an expectation among more mainstream fans that the Uzi of tomorrow will sound like the Uzi of today, it remains to be seen whether a return to bars will give his label what they want in terms of numbers.
