Papa John's CEO and founder John Schnatter stepped down from the company on Thursday (December 21) after backlash over blaming the NFL protests for a dip in sales. The company's current president, Steve Ritchie, will be taking over for Schnatter.

According to a statement from Papa John's, Schnatter will "pursue his personal passion for entrepreneurship, leadership development, and education." Back in 2005, Schnatter stepped down as CEO amid low sales, but he returned just three years later.

Aside from his statements about the NFL protests, Schnatter came under fire for voicing his disdain for the Affordable Care Act, saying it was a "lose-lose" situation for Papa John's franchise owners and employees. The company's shares fell 4.2% at the time, according to Forbes.
