In a lopsided 364–58 vote, legislators rejected an impeachment resolution from Democratic house representative Al Green of Texas. Every Republican and a majority of Democrats voted against the impeachment, shutting down the resolution quickly.

However, despite the fact that the impeachment of President Trump was shot down quickly, it represents a growing support amongst Democrats to get Donald Trump out of the White House.

From the start, there was clear opposition to the impeachment resolution from leaders of the Democratic Party, most likely due to the articles of impeachment presented by Green. Green never argues that Trump specifically committed a crime, rather that he has “brought disrepute, contempt, ridicule, and disgrace on the presidency and sown discord among the people of the United States.”

Green cited the NFL protests and the handling of events such as the Charlottesville riots featuring white supremacists as evidence to his claims. While truly abhorrent in nature, these assertions would make it difficult to find Trump guilty of anything during an impeachment process. Despite this opposition from party leaders, nearly 1/3 of Democrats voted in support of the impeachment.

Many Democratic leaders are citing the ongoing investigation into potential collusion with the Russian government as reasoning why they don’t support the current impeachment.
