This year, we have witnessed two mass shootings take place in Las Vegas and Texas which impacted the nation. Despite the tragedies that took place, a Michigan Senate committee reportedly approved numerous bills that will permit gun owners to carry concealed weapons in gun-free zones. Some of those zones include stadiums, dorms, bars, day care centers, schools, and churches.

The Senate Committee referenced the Baptist Church shooting in Texas as a reason to bring up the potentially-harmful gun legislation. When speaking to the Senate Government Operations Committee about the reasoning for the bills, Senate Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof told the crowd “Some have said it’s insensitive to bring up these issues now, but I feel quite the opposite. The recent events will allow us to look at how we can deter those who want to do harm. And responsible, well-trained, licensed concealed-pistol holders can be one of those deterrents.”

Although the Senate Committee’s intentions may be positive, the Michigan Association of School Boards does not agree. Executive Director Don Wotruba said, “Unless you’re trained for a military or police perspective, you’re not well-trained.” Democratic Senate Minority Leader Jim Ananich spoke down on the potential bills as well, saying “I’m not sure what’s worse, the bills or the insensitivity of what just happened over the weekend. We haven’t even buried those individuals in Texas yet, and we’re talking about making it less safe.”
