Cardi B. rose to fame simply expressing her opinions on social media. It should come as no surprise that she voiced hers regarding Columbus Day, which is celebrated in many U.S. companies with a day off. However, the holiday constantly stirs debates over race and Christopher Columbus' actual history.
In a video making its rounds online, the "Bodak Yellow" rapper shared her thoughts on the holiday. "A lot of people be online like, oh Christopher Columbus didn't discover America," she started. "Oh, we praising the wrong people, Christopher Columbus didn't discover America. Alright though! We know that sh*t though! We know that but shut the f**k up before people start catching up and then, we gotta go back to work on Christopher Columbus Day and we got one f***ing whole free day off that kids don't go to school!"
Many of those who commented seemed to disagree. One user wrote, "But she ain't never had a 9-5 so what she mad for?" Another joked, "Imma kneel this one out." One user wrote something many agreed with, saying "We can call it Indigenous People's Day and still have the day off."
A few cities including Los Angeles, California, Austin, Texas and Salt Lake City, Utah have voted to rename the holiday Indigenous Peoples' Day in order to celebrate the contributions of Native Americans.
