While reports have surfaced of possible destruction caused by Hurricane Irma, along with clips and photos from social media, NASA has gone the extra length to display how bad things got during this storm. NASA took to Twitter to show a time span from before the storm to right after it passed through Florida. According to NASA, “As the clouds cleared over places like the Virgin Islands, the destruction became obvious even from space.”

Photos from NASA pointed out the changes in the color of the lands affected by the storm. NASA gave reasons why this could occur, saying, “Lush green tropical vegetation can be ripped away by a storm’s strong winds, leaving the satellite with a view of more bare ground. Also, salt spray whipped up by the hurricane can coat and desiccate leaves while they are still on the trees.”

In the photos that they posted, destruction of Barbuda, a small island in the Caribbean can be seen pretty clearly. They did a contrast with two photos: one from August 21 and another showing the small island after Hurricane Irma hit on September 8. Antigua is not too far from Barbuda and still looks to have the same amount of vegetation from August 21 to September based on the photos.
