North Korea on Tuesday tested a long-range missile that it claims can reach "anywhere in the world."

The missile test, ordered by Kim Jong Un, reached a height of 1,741 miles--the highest altitude ever reached by a North Korean missile--and traveled 578 miles. One expert said that North Korea aimed the missile high to test its range, but that if the missile were fired on a normal trajectory it would have range of up to 6,000 kilometers.

North Korea may have timed the test for political effect, conducting the test in the early hours of the July 4th holiday. The fear of the United States and of North Korea's neighbors is that they will develop the technology to mount a miniature nuclear warhead on one of its long-range missiles.
