Remy Ma shut Summer Jam down at MetLife Stadium over the weekend, bringing out a who's who of legendary female emcees after running through a bevy of Terror Squad hits with Fat Joe. But it was in how she finished her set that aligned the Bronx rapper's performance in the vein of rap battles that have taken center stage at the annual Hot 97 concert.
The New York takeover continued after Joe left the stage, with Brooklyn's Young M.A. coming out to perform "Ooouuu," before fellow BX rapper Cardi B ripped the mic. Then it was back to Brooklyn with rap's Queen B, Lil Kim, getting the crowd to rock in sync with her. The future hip-hop Hall of Famer would bust the gates open for several other all-time greats, including Rah Digga, Monie Love, MC Lyte and Jersey's own transcendental figure, Queen Latifah. The collective was called out to convene together on stage for a recital of Latifah's classic, "U.N.I.T.Y."
Remy would later take to Instagram to reflect on the moment as one of the most important of her career, writing: "The highlight of my night and one of the highlights of my life...bringing the Queen @queenlatifah out to perform UNITY while standing on stage with the great @mclyte , @therealrahdigga @darealmonielove @theladyofrage_ @lilkimthequeenbee @hennynhoes @iamcardib Thank you all for help creating this monumental moment; I am humbled by each one of you."
But while the message of unity appeared to resonate with the crowd and those flooding the stage, Remy had some unfinished business to attend to concerning her rap nemesis. "F**k Nicki Minaj," Remy hollered, as the "Ether" beat dropped for her to wrap it up with another menacing rendition of "Shether."
