When sixth-grader Xavier Davis showed up to school with a haircut that has been made famous by soccer stars and musicians, he was told to fix it, or he might face suspension.

The haircut that caused the problem? Two simple lines shaved into the side of his hair above his left temple. Although it seemed innocent enough, his teacher at Cedar Bayou Junior High School in Baytown, Texas, thought otherwise. Xavier told Houston-based TV station, KPRC, “I was walking into class, and then she saw my hair and said, 'You can't have two lines in your hair. Go to the office.'”

That is because the school district’s dress code stipulates, “Letters, symbols, and designs beyond a single straight line which draw attention to an individual shall not be permitted...The administrator/supervisor reserves the right to determine if a hairstyle is disruptive to the educational process."

Xavier didn’t find the ruling to be fair. His father, Matt Davis, also agreed with his son’s assessment. He commented that Xavier had his hair styled like that for six months and it was never a problem. He added, “I don’t know if one line or two is a distraction to anyone learning, it’s not a distraction to me, it’s nonsense.”

Even though Xavier and his father disagreed with the school’s interpretation of the dress code, he nevertheless received a one-day in-school suspension. To make sure he didn’t get suspended any further, his mother came up with an intuitive solution. She grabbed a Sharpie permanent marker at home and colored in the bottom line. That way, it appeared he only had one line shaved into his hair.

While it appears the problem has been solved, his father told KPRC, “in order for him to get an education, we have to treat his hair like a coloring book, I guess."
