Isaiah Acosta of Phoenix, AZ has never tasted food, has never voiced a word, and has never taken a conventional breath. That's because 17 years ago he was born without pathways for oxygen to enter his body, and he was born without a jaw. Nevertheless, doctors raced to create a means for him to survive until today, and thanks to a local rapper, and a little help from technology, the mute teen has released a hip hop single through which he shares his story.
The project, "Oxygen to Fly," which was produced by the Children's Miracle Network, captures the finished product of a collaboration between Acosta and rapper Trap House. The lyrics are Acosta's, the voice is Trap's. Thanks to his ability to articulate himself through sign language, and his use of text messaging, Acosta was able to provide the rapper with the lyrics he needed him to convey so that his dream to shine on wax could come full circle.
The video has continued to take off since its March 9 release, having been screened at the South by Southwest Music Festival over the weekend, and tallied spins on iTunes and Spotify. It is more than Acosta ever could have asked for, considering the miracle his very survival has been.
"I'VE BEEN HOLDING THIS IN FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS NOW FINALLY RELEASE Approval. I WROTE RAP SONG A RAPPER by the name of TRAPHOUSE was the voice to my words on paper. Jmelo helped with the hook to my song Cmn made sure I knew anything is possible in life," Acosta wrote in an Instagram post introducing the song to his followers. "My rap song is helping thousands and thousands of kids and teens around the world at CMNH If you buy My song your not just supporting me your giveing back to many. If I can help one voiceless person out of all this. I feel I DID WHAT I HAD TO DO."
