National Security Advisor Michael Flynn has resigned after it has been revealed that he lied to White House officials about his conversations with the Russian ambassador to the United States.
The National Security Advisor has one of the most critical roles in American government, as the respective role is directly tied to our safety as a nation. The National Security advisor plays a crucial role in the administration of the National Security Council, which is responsible for briefing the President on national and foreign policy issues.
According to routine wiretaps conducted on all diplomats when traveling abroad, Flynn, before Trump's election, attempted to assuage the concerns of the Russian government, representing a remarkable violation of protocol. Having been aware, the Justice Department considered Flynn a major blackmail risk. The Russians knew what had been said on the call; thus, if they wanted Mr. Flynn to do something, they could have threatened to expose the lie if he refused. Mr. Flynn's conversation with the Russian ambassador to the United States also included a discussion about sanctions imposed on Russia after intelligence agencies determined that Vladimir Putin’s government tried to interfere with the 2016 election on Trump's behalf.
Needless to say, Michael Flynn has resigned as national security advisor, but the damage has been done in an already controversial three weeks since the President took office. Check out his resignation letter above. Do you believe that Trump and VP Mike Pence were unaware of Flynn's extraordinary breach of protocol of ethics? Let us know in the comments.
