Lil Yachty believes he is the poster child for the new generation of what some call “mumble rap,” and for that, he receives a lot of hate from fans and fellow artists who don’t like the style.

The “Minnesota” rapper recently told Power 106.1 Los Angeles why he thinks he’s hated on by so many people in today’s hip-hop climate, despite having such a big following. “I’m starting to realize people use my name and my face as the forefront for the new generation. I just feel like when people really hate the whole new generation they just use me as the face,” said Yachty. “In a sense, it’s like blame me for everything that’s going on. I don’t care. I’m just doing me. It’s interesting how people like to blame you when I’m doing nothing wrong.” Yachty thinks the haters judge him solely off negative interview clips where he is speaking his mind. He’s been criticized for saying things like Drake is a better artist than Tupac and Biggie because unlike the two veterans he can rap and sing.

Yachty also discussed his thoughts on Biggie in the interview with Power 106.1. He admitted that he really never heard the Brooklyn rapper’s music and recently went back and listened to his albums. He blamed not hearing the music on his mom who later said Biggie was her favorite artist. Yachty plans on apologizing for the comments he made about Biggie in an upcoming special event with a New York DJ. The rapper has a colorful history with Hot 97’s Ebro Darden so they might be reuniting to reach out to the angry fans. Ebro blasted Yachty in the summer about his raps calling them “high school bars.” Yachty replied with a diss record titled “For Hot 97.”
