Monday evening (Aug. 31) three cops entered the wrong Georgia home and opened fire after responding to a burglary call - one of them is currently in stable condition after accidentally being shot by one of his fellow officers.

Around 7:30 p.m. the three officers got reports of a suspicious person near Bouldercrest Road in Dekalb County. Upon arriving, they found a house that matched the description given on the call but were unable to make contact with anyone. They then noticed an unlocked door and screen at the rear of the home and announced their presence as they entered. Shortly after they spotted a dog and opened fire. "Two officers fired their weapons, striking and killing the animal in the kitchen," reports GBI spokesman, Scott Dutton. The homeowner, Chris McKinley, entered the kitchen some time after and was shot in the leg. He has since been seen by doctors and was released.

At some point, one of the cops was shot in the hip and had to undergo surgery at Grady Memorial Hospital. As of this morning he's been listed in serious, yet stable, condition. "Early investigation indicates that the injured officer was likely shot accidentally by one of the other officers on the scene," Dutton said.

There was "no indication of criminal activity" at that house, he continued. "Responding officers likely entered a residence unrelated to the initial 911 call although it matched the given dispatched description."

Though only two of the officers fired their weapons, all three have been placed on paid administrative leave.
