Pharrell has had quite the successful career, spanning well over two decades, but he recently revealed that there was one rapper he could never compete with. He said that it wasn't until recently that he realized that you have to compete against yourself in the music industry, and not others, but he believes he'll never touch Jay Z.
"[I was] this competitive guy in the music industry, who admired my peers and felt he needed to compete with the races that they designed. But in life you're meant to race against yourself. Jay was never going to race with any of us. That was just my delusion. Because his career runs laps round people. And he runs laps round people, lyrically. He's a philosopher and a poet."
