41-year-old "Prison Break" star Wentworth Miller revealed August 21st that he is gay. Miller made the announcement in a letter he wrote to the St. Petersburg International Film Festival, in which he declined an invitation to attend their event. Miller cited Russia's crackdown on homosexual individuals as his reason for not joining the Film Festival.
"As a gay man, I must decline," Wentworth said in the letter.
Wilson Cruz, a representative for GLAAD, praised Wentworth for his bold statement defending his honor and that of the entire LGBT community.
"Wentworth's bold show of support sends a powerful message to LGBT Russians, who are facing extreme violence and persecution: you are not alone."
Russia has imposed laws upon its citizens and those visiting that allow people to be fined if they are accused of spreading "propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations" to minors. Its government has also banned rallies for gay pride, as well as banning any same-sex couples from adopting Russian-born children. To make matters worse, anyone who visits the country and is suspected of simply being gay is now in danger of being detained for up to 15 days. Many are worried about their strict laws against gay people even more so because Russia is set to host the 2014 Winter Olympics.
