Rice University's Special Collections department has a new musical addition. Houston record label Swishahouse will be immortalized at the school, which plans to archive vintage music, posters, and pictures from the Southern record label's movement. Swishahouse is partially responsible for popularizing the classic Houston "Chopped and Screwed" style, and helped launch the careers of Paul Wall, Slim Thug, Chamillionaire, Mike Jones, and others. The archive will be held at the Woodson Research Center Special Collections and University Archives section of Rice's Fondren library.
"We are delighted to be able to initiate this effort with the materials brought to us by Swishahouse," CERCL founding director Anthony Pinn said. "You can't think about Hip Hop without giving attention to the brothers (G Dash and Michael "5000" Watts) who've made this happen."
As one of the nation's top 20 universities, the accomplishment is quite prestigious.
