Street violence, no matter how justified or random, always has the potential to spill innocent blood. This past Friday, February 17th, was no different.
In front of a bodega on 16th street and Union Avenue, a fight suddenly broke out between two women, one of whom was carrying a child. The fight, initiated by an unknown female attacker, occurred with the baby still being held in its mother's arms.
Motive for the fist fight that turned tragically bloody is unknown. Bodega owner John Martinez claims that he ran outside of the store when he heard the sounds of hand-to-hand violence occurring between the two women.
The sight he saw once outside of his store was surely a disturbing one. The 4 month old baby was bleeding steadily from a wound to her forehead, believed to be caused by the attacker stabbing her with a pen. He described the baby's mother :
"The mother was desperate, kneeling next to the baby stroller. She was on her knees..."
The attacker is still on the loose and the mother and her baby's identities are being witheld from the public at this time. Theories have risen stating that the baby might have been the intended target of this attack.
Thankfully the child is in stable condition at Lincoln Hospital. Let us all hope that the woman responsible for the stabbing is swiftly brought to justice.
