It was reported last week that NBA star Matt Barnes was arrested in Manhattan Beach, CA for an outstanding traffic warrant. It was also alleged that he resisted arrest and had some harsh words for the arresting officer. Now a new development has arisen: according to Barnes and other witnesses, he may have been set up to be arrested, because the arresting officer took two hours to actually apprehend him.

Sources say the current NBA free agent got his license reinstated at the DMV and mistakenly thought the traffic warrant was taken care of too. The arresting officer was said to have knowledge of Barnes' warrant as he watched him and his girlfriend Gloria Govan walk to a restaurant after parking their car. Instead of approaching the couple, the officer hid in an alley.

When the couple returned to their vehicle to depart from the scene, the officer then appeared and stated that Barnes was under arrest. Barnes contends that the officer never told him why he was under arrest, and as he tried to hand his car keys to his girlfriend, the officer yanked his arm away saying he was under arrest for resisting.

The officer's motives remain unclear.
