Last week Gucci Mane threw his name in the hat surrounding the debate of who originated rap's trap music subgenre.

On Friday (April 6), Gucci posted a Flashback Friday photo of himself and captioned the image "#FBF The Day I Invented Trap Music #Guwop aka #TheEvilGenius #1017Ceo."

There has long been a debate among Atlanta rappers about who is responsible for creating trap music. Last year, T.I. staked claim on creating the sub-genre in 2003 with the release of his sophomore album Trap Muzik. Gucci Mane's debut album Trap House was released in 2005.

Despite that rap newcomer Lil Pump has stepped forward in agreeance that GuWop is the creator of the trap genre. The Floridian rapper went on his Instagram story to assert the claim. "I'm just trolling ya'll Gucci Mane did make trap music," says the 17-year-old as he worn a 1017 chain around his neck. It has been previously reported that Pump signed to Gucci's Eskimo records.

It seems like the debate will rage on over who the inventor of trap music truly is. Unless you were in The A during the early 2000s it's hard to give credit as each artist from T.I. to Jeezy to Gucci helped in some way to innovate the subgenre and bring it national attention.
