The highly contested special election for the state of Alabama’s open Senate seat ended Tuesday night with the shocking victory by Democratic candidate Doug Jones over Republican Roy Moore. The win by Jones shifts the power dynamic in the Senate as the Republicans only hold a two-seat advantage over Democrats.

The victory makes policy-making slightly harder for Republicans, who now can’t afford to lose a single member on issues like tax reform, immigration, and healthcare. While Vice-president Pence still holds the tie-breaking vote in the Senate, the loss of Moore in the traditionally red state of Alabama may spark a blue wave going into 2018.

However, Alabama native and NBA Hall of Famer, Charles Barkley believes Jones’ win is a 'wake-up call’ for Democrats, who he feels take the poor and black vote for granted. Speaking with CNN, Barkley, who was a supporter of Jones, gave Democrats a warning that its time to support the communities who come out in droves to help them get elected.

"This is a wake up for Democrats.” Barkley said to CNN’s Jake Tapper on Tuesday “I told Mr. Jones this, and I love Doug – they’ve taken the black vote and the poor vote for granted for a long time. It’s time for them to get off their a**es and start making life better for black folks and people who are poor. They always had our votes and have abused our votes, and this is a wakeup call.”
