The security guard who first encountered Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock broke his silence about the events during an appearance on Ellen.

In the episode which aired Wednesday, Mandalay Bay security officer Jesus Campos spoke with the talk show host about the experience which left him with a gunshot wound to the leg. Also appearing on the show was the hotel's building engineer Stephen Schuck, who would have been shot himself if not for a warning from Campos.

During the emotional segment, Campos explained how he was investigating a fire escape door which had been locked closed when he heard what he thought were "drilling sounds" coming from Paddock's suite on the 32nd floor of the hotel.

"As I was walking down [the hallway] I heard rapid fire, and at first I took cover," Campos recalled. "I felt a burning sensation...I went to go lift my pant leg up and saw the blood. That's when I called it in on my radio that shots had been fired."

Campos was wounded by Paddock on October 1st, shortly before the gunman began raining gunfire down on concertgoers at the Route 91 Harvest Festival from his hotel room on the 32nd floor.
