It looks like Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott will be on the bench for the next month and a half, as the six-game suspension he was handed for allegedly assaulting his ex-girlfriend, has been reinstated. The ruling comes over one month after a judge ordered a preliminary injunction that restrained the league from imposing the suspension of Elliott pending the results of an appeal filed by the NFL Players Association.

The court's decision to weigh on the side of the NFL's front office is reported to have been determined by the initial court's lack of the subject matter jurisdiction necessary to have granted a stay in the first place. Elliott's defense team is currently examining what legal steps could be taken, and whether they are interested in challenging the ruling going forward. Meanwhile, the league has declared that Elliott will begin serving his suspension immediately and is scheduled to return by November 24, at the earliest.

Six-games is the punishment established by the NFL following criticism over its traditional handling of domestic violence cases. The sanctions were instituted following the public's uproar over former Ravens RB Ray Rice receiving a two-game suspension for knocking his girlfriend out in an incident caught on video in 2014. While six-games is the initial punishment, a second incident results in a lifetime ban.
