The National Football League is being asked to take a complete 180-degree turn on their stance regarding political involvement and social protest. According to a Yahoo Sports report, a group of current and former NFL players sent a 10-page memo to Commissioner Roger Goodell and league executive Troy Vincent. The memo asked league officials for financial support toward political involvement and for the league to recognize the month of November as activism awareness month. Seattle Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett, Philadelphia Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins, and receiver Torrey Smith, as well as recently retired wide receiver Anquan Boldin was credited with co-authoring the memo.

The NFL has been at the center of sports-related political controversy following the situation with quarterback and social justice activist Colin Kaepernick. Considering the de-facto ban against Kaepernick due to his political views and involvement, it is hard to believe the league would acknowledge such concerns at this point. The league did, however, step up to the defense of Michael Bennett following his incident with the Las Vegas Police Department following the Mayweather-McGregor super fight. Nevertheless, when asked to comment on the letter, the NFL declined the opportunity. The marquee players involved in authoring the letter also declined comment when approached by Yahoo Sports.
