Hurricane Irma is rapidly making its way towards Florida, and now Governor Rick Scott has asked residents that will potentially be affected by the storm to leave their area as soon as possible.

Scott spoke to the press, saying “We are running out of time, the storm is almost here. If you are in an evacuation zone, you need to go now. This is a catastrophic storm that our state has never seen. We can rebuild your home; we cannot rebuild your life. Protecting life is our absolute top priority. Our number one priority is protecting everyone’s life. Everyone’s life is important.” During an interview with Good Morning America, Scott said “If you're in an evacuation zone, you've got to get out; you can't wait. This thing's coming," he warned. "It looks like it's going to go right through the middle of our state.” He went on to say “I'm a father, I'm a grandfather, I love my family. I hope every parent in this state and grandparent is thinking, 'How do I protect my family?’”

Previously this week, Scott declared a statewide emergency, and also made the call to close all public schools Friday through Monday for the buildings to be used as shelters. According to the Governor, Hurricane Irma could be way worse than Hurricane Andrew, which hit the state in 1992.
