A few weeks ago, news broke of an NYC MTA train derailing, starting off the infamous “Summer of Hell.” Now, news has arrived that the MTA is set to test out the removal of seats on the L train and Grand Central shuttle running through Manhattan. According to MTA Chairman Joe Lhota, seats on the train will be removed to increase the possible capacity on train lines that potential could become overcrowded. Lhota also noted that cars that do not have seats will be painted a different color as an indicator to commuters on the availability of seats.

Lhota went on to say “"We're having a record number of customers. We also have ancient infrastructure, combined with a lack of capital investment over the long haul. These three issues alone are the reasons why the subway system is failing its customers.” It was revealed during Lhota’s address in a press conference that the whole plan will cost $8.8 billion. The state will foot half of the bill, while the city will pay the other half. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo approves of the MTA’s plan, calling it “substantive and realistic.”
