As Greg Gianforte (R) won Montana's special election this past Thursday night (May 25), he finally apologized for body slamming a reporter from The Guardian.

Gianforte, who received 50.4% of the state's votes, touched on the incident that evening, saying, "When you make a mistake, you have to own up to it, that's the Montana way. Last night I made a mistake, and I took an action that I can't take back, and I'm not proud of what happened. I should not have responded in the way that I did, and for that I am sorry."

The newly elected member of the U.S. House of Representatives came under intense fire Wednesday after audio surfaced of the alleged body slam. He reportedly attacked the journalist after he was asked a question about health care.

The speech marked his first comments on the incident since it happened.
