A special election that will be held on Thursday [May 25] to fill a congressional seat in Montana will be marred in controversy, as it lands one day after one of the candidates running for office allegedly body slammed a reporter who got into his personal space at an event that took place in Bozeman.

Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs took to Twitter on Wednesday evening to inform followers of the shocking incident, tweeting "Greg Gianforte just body slammed me and broke my glasses." While Gianforte's team counters that it was Jacobs who initiated the conflict by shoving his recorder in his face, authorities apparently found enough evidence to arrest the Republican politician. He has been charged with misdemeanor assault.

Several Fox News staffers who were on hand are reportedly backing Jacobs' claim, with one claiming to have witnessed Gianforte grab him by the neck and slam him down. An audio recording capturing the moment is said to reveal Gianforte aggressively commanding Jacobs to "get the hell out of here."

Gianforte is scheduled to appear in court on June 7 for a hearing on the incident.
