Dylann Roof, the white supremacist who killed nine people in a historically black church in Charleston, South Carolina in 2015, pled guilty to nine counts of murder at a South Carolina state court.

A circuit judge is expected to sentence Roof to life in prison. In January, a federal jury sentenced him to death.

Roof is to be transferred from a local jail to a federal prison where he will await execution, law enforcement officials say.
