The New York Knicks organization has released a statement refuting Charles Oakley's claim that he was ejected from Madison Square Garden for no reason, before an altercation broke out between him and law enforcement on Wednesday night, February 8.

"It started when he entered the building and continued until he was arrested and left the building," the statement read, referring to him having exhibited "abusive" behavior which law enforcement are cited as having witnessed. According to the statement, the several accounts that are documented on record contradict Oakley's claim that he had merely been watching the game with a couple of friends when he was ordered to leave. "Everything he said since the incident is pure fiction," the statement reads.

Immediately after the incident sources began to report that the commotion involved Oakley directing comments at team owner James Dolan, with whom he's had a contentious relationship for years. Oakley does confirm that a brief spat of words was exchanged between him and at least one person from the Knicks brass, with him asking why they were looking at him. But Oakley contends that he had only taken to his seat for all of four minutes and for most of that time wasn't even aware that Dolan was nearby. While the video does show Oakley shouting, the recordings capture his behavior only after having been confronted by a group of security personnel. It is not known whether he badgered Dolan at any point before that moment.

Oakley would be whisked away after an estimated 15 people were able to subdue him on the ground. He was arrested on charges of misdemeanor assault and criminal trespassing and released shortly after being booked. When presented with the Knicks statement while a guest on Stephen A. Smith's ESPN radio show, Oakley responded: "They are good PR, they want to be cute with the statements, but it's cool, though." He particularly took exception to the Knicks suggestion that he "gets some help soon," calling the comment a "smack in the face."
