ESPN's Stephen A. Smith dedicated the opening portion of Monday's [January 16] episode of First Take to delivering a PSA to Black Americans who've been resistant to accepting Trump as their President. The veteran sports analyst cited the reaction to Steve Harvey, Jim Brown, and Ray Lewis, by the likes of peers like DL Hughley, and by the general public, in urging viewers to consider how much more beneficial it might be to hold Trump accountable for what course he does take, than to remain dismissive of the incoming administration.

"On a day like today, when we celebrate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., along with his undeniable historical impact, perhaps it's time for all of us to see the big picture," said Smith.  "To essentially pay more attention to the issues permeating our society; what it will take to resolve them; and connecting ourselves to who we ultimately can hold accountable, rather than focusing on disdain for that very individual in a position to make a difference. Knowing that's not about to get us anywhere."

On Monday morning, MLK's son, Martin Luther King III, became the most recent figure to represent the face of Black America in the lobby of Trump Tower. Smith recognized the reaction of many, who have assumed that all involved are linking up for the sake of a photo op, in their own interest, but he pushed for dissenters to consider what might be possible if the door was open for such stars as Lebron James, Chris Paul and baseball's Adam Jones to negotiate on behalf of the community's plight.
