Donald Trump surprised many on Monday, January 16, when on the occasion in which Americans celebrate his father's birthday, he hosted a meeting with Martin Luther King III in New York City.

The President-elect fueled up his critics heading into the national holiday, when it was announced over the weekend that he would be canceling a visit to the Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture. In the judgment of some, Trump was able to redeem himself as they watched the eldest son of the civil rights icon being swarmed by reporters as he exited Trump Tower.

King III described their meeting as productive. He voiced confidence that the 45th President's intention is to represent all Americans, but was sure to remind viewers that his integrity in doing so will be incumbent on the public pressuring him to do so. It is a dynamic involving the relationship between the office of Presidency and U.S. citizens, which he said his father understood.

When asked what he thought his father's message would be to Trump, King III responded: "I think my father would be very concerned about the fact that there are 50 or 60 million people living in poverty. And somehow we've got to create the climate for all boats to be lifted. In America, with a multi-trillion dollar economy, 20 trillion dollars almost, it's insanity that we have poor people in this nation. That's unacceptable. And when we work together we know we can roll up our sleeves. There is nothing that we as Americans can't do."
