A St. Louis County police officer is under investigation after turning the civil unrest following the 2014 fatal shooting of Michael Brown into a punchline.

Officer Todd J. Bakula joked about spending his "annual Michael Brown bonus" in a recent Facebook post, according to the Daily News.

18-year-old Brown was shot and killed last year by Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson. Questionable circumstances surrounding the shooting, and Wilson's subsequent acquittal of any wrongdoing, led to widespread rioting in Ferguson.

A state of emergency was declared last week in St. Louis on the one-year anniversary of Michael Brown's death.

"I decided to spend my annual Michael Brown bonus on a nice relaxing bicycle ride trip to Defiance, [Missouri]," Bakula wrote under the name TJ Thekoola. "Eating dinner now and staying at a bed and breakfast tonight."

A spokesman with the St. Louis County police said the department is aware of the post and is investigating the comments.

"We understand the post is controversial," police spokesman Shawn McGuire said.

"The St. Louis County police department takes these allegations very serious in every case," McGuire added. "The remarks on the Facebook page will be investigated by our department."
