Millions have been outraged at the fact that the Confederate flag still waves high outside the South Carolina State Capitol in Columbia. Today, after two incidents regarding the flag in recent weeks and years worth of protest, the South Carolina Senate has officially voted to have it taken down.

Though the Senate made the announcement this morning (July 6), the flag cannot be taken down until the proposal is seen by the House of Representatives. This comes weeks after Dylann Roof killed nine Black churchgoers in Charleston, a racist hate crime that has angered many to the point where an individual by the name of Bree Newsome decided to take matters into her own hands.

Dozens have protested in front of the Capitol for weeks, demanding that the flag be taken down. According to Mashable, "some powerful Republicans have not said how they will vote" in the House.
