The NFL is looking to break up their issues with diversity, as the league has revealed they hired Maia Chaka to officiate games. Chaka is the first Black woman to be hired as an NFL official, but this isn’t her first major role as an officiator. Chaka has found herself working with the NCAA, as well as the AAF in the past.

Since the news broke, Chaka issued a statement addressing the groundbreaking move. Chaka said, “I am honored to be selected as an NFL official. But this moment is bigger than a personal accomplishment. It is an accomplishment for all women, my community, and my culture.” News of this comes after the NFL revealed they would have the first all-Black officiating crew to work ‘Monday Night Football’ in late 2020. Take a look at Chaka’s statement above.
