After three Black senators voiced their intentions of passing a bill through the Senate to make lynching a federal crime, the mission was accomplished on Wednesday after a unanimous vote. The bill was a bipartisan effort spearheaded by Democratic Sens. Cory Booker and Kamala Harris, and Republican Sen. Tim Scott.

The new legislation would ensure that those carrying out lynchings would receive enhanced sentences. It is not immediately clear if the House will vote on the measure and have it sent to Trump prior to the holiday recess.
