NYPD watchdog group Police Reform Organizing Project (PROP) analyzed demographics of the 6,604 weed-related arrests this year, and they found that a disproportionate amount of Black and Latinx New Yorkers were impacted. PROP found the 93% of the people arrested for weed this year were people of color.

Mayor Bill de Blasio has been working on efforts to reform the NYPD after “stop-and-frisk” showed implicit bias against people of color. However, this new study shows that the NYPD is arresting a large number of people of color, despite studies showing that white people sell and use cannabis more than people of color.

The NYPD responded to PROP's study by pointing out a 90 percent reduction in stop-and-frisks and 8,000 officers
