School shootings have seemed to become the norm in American culture. Last month, on Valentines Day, Nikolas Cruz slaughtered 17 people with an AR-15 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Now, another school shooting has left one girl dead, and another boy injured.

Huffman High sits in northeast Birmingham, the biggest city in Alabama. During dismissal time on Wednesday, one young girl, whose identity has yet to be revealed, was shot and killed. She was 17 years old. A 17-year-old boy was also shot, but is in stable condition.

Birmingham Interim Police Chief Orlando Wilson has been hesitant to release details surrounding the school shooting. During a news conference, Chief Wilson stated, “At this particular time, we are considering this accidental."

The school was forced into a lockdown after the shooting, but students were allowed to leave shortly after the area had been deemed safe. Chief Wilson has refused to comment on a suspect, or what gun was used in the murder.

“We are not just talking about some person, (we’re) talking about losing a part of our future. Our hearts are heavy,” stated Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin during the press conference. On Thursday, one person was taken into police custody in connection with the school shooting. Details about the detainee have yet to be released.
