Ja Rule had something to say about the conditions many public housing tenants have long suffered with each passing winter, and he joined New York City officials and members of the community on the steps of City Hall to rally on Tuesday, February 20.

According to City Council data, nearly 80 percent of NYCHA (New York City Housing Authority) tenants were impacted by heat outages during this frigid winter. In response, several City Council members joined to organize a press conference to call for renovations to heating systems across the city's public housing complexes. Ja Rule, as someone who was raised in Hollis, Queens, identifies with the struggle and joined to lend his voice to the conversation. He started out by calling officials to take action or face resistance.

“Let’s come out and let’s fight this cause first. Let’s shut this city down. We ain’t paying no more rent until this situation is dealt with. No heat, no hot water? No money, no rent,” he said. He spoke before a crowd of city residents who chanted "Turn up the heat" and "NYCHA is freezing."

“City Hall, New York City, the mayor, the governor, they should all be ashamed of themselves. These are Americans, New Yorkers living in third world conditions and it should not be this way,” he said.
