The United States could potentially gain its 51st state if the founders of the "New California" have any say. The group took its first step at establishing statehood by reading its Declaration of Independence from California on Monday. The New California group is looking to take over most of modern-day California, excluding the urban coastal cities, and establish a new state that operates for the benefit of those outside California's urban centers.
"The current state of California has become governed by a tyranny," said the group's vice chairman Robert Paul Preston. The New California group is hoping to have similar success as West Virginia did in separating from Virginia.
This isn't the first time a split of California has been proposed, however. Back in 2014, venture capitalist Tim Draper proposed the state be broken into six parts with one such being the "State of Silicon Valley." Draper's proposition didn't make the ballot.
