Before Lauryn Hill was sentenced to three months in prison for tax evasion, she claimed that slavery was to blame for her money troubles. Hill sat in court and told the judge that she planned to pay her taxes on time, but said that citizens do not get to choose when to write a check to the IRS.

She stated, "I am a child of former slaves who had a system imposed on them. I had an economic system imposed on me."

The "Nothing Even Matters" singer also claimed that while she made millions for others, she lived quite modestly.

"Someone did the math, and it came to around $600 million," she said. "And I sit here before you trying to figure out how to pay a tax debt? If that's not like enough to slavery, I don't know."

Lauryn earned $1.8 million from 2005-2007, but didn't file tax returns, which led to the judge ordering her to a three month prison term that will begin in July.
